Located in beautiful Sierra Vista, Sierra Vista Baptist Church has a long legacy of spreading the love of Jesus in the communities of Sierra Vista and Ft Huachuca. We are a group of believers centered around God's Word. We seek to glorify God in our worship, and all of life. Some distinctives of Sierra Baptist Church
-Expository Sermons: We believe the Bible is God's Word. Every word is pure and true (Psalm 12:6; 19:9; 119:140). Therefore, every word deserves to be examined and understood in the context that it was written. The preacher is to submit to the Word of God in his preaching and will preach the message of the text and not twist it to fit his own views. The preacher's job is to clarify and expound on the text skillfully providing application for today. The goal of the sermon is for all to leave thinking and knowing what God is saying to me from His Word.
-Congregational Singing: The New Testament requires us to sing together (Eph 5:19). The goal is for the voices of the people are prominent and the words clear and Christ-centered. There are multiple benefits to this type of focus in musical worship. There is a level of unity and fellowship that arises when believers can hear one another worship God through singing. When the entire congregation sings songs that are full of truth we are affirming with one voice the truth we believe. Our songs are selected on three criteria.
1) Is it true? We must sing songs that affirm biblical and theological truth.
2) Is it singable? Some songs are difficult to sing because of the vocal range and complexity.
3) Is it familiar? Songs have to be learned and introduced over a period of time, we take time to teach the congregation the less familiar song so that we all can participate.
-Multigenerational: Titus 2:1-10 tells us that older women are to teach younger women, and Older men are to be sober-minded. This means that we have an obligation to share our faith with the next generation. We seek to be a place that is welcoming to all ages and generations.
-Mission Minded: We have a heart for missions, we are committed to the Great Commission and seek to make disciples of all nations. We support various missionaries around the world as well as missions close to home. We seek to take the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth, starting at our own neighborhoods.
-Plurality of Elders: We believe the term elder and pastor are synonymous. The primary task before Elders is the “shepherding of God’s flock which the Holy Spirit has put under their care.” They will work together to shepherd the people God has entrusted to them. Their primary duties consist of teaching (1 Tim. 5:17), keeping watch over the spiritual health of the church and protecting it from doctrinal error (Acts 20:28-31), leading the church in the worship of God, setting an example of godly attitudes and living (Titus 2:1-2, 6:8; 1 Peter 5:1-3), and delegating practical ministry (Acts 6:1-7).
-Accountability to the Congregation: Though the Elders are the decision-making authority in the church, they are expected to exercise their authority according to the principles of servant-leadership outlined in Scripture. The model for their leadership is Jesus Christ (Eph, 5:23-27, Phil, 2:5-8). Members can expect the leaders of the church to listen, prayerfully consider, and promptly respond to their needs. Members have the privilege and responsibility to express their concerns to the Elders when needs arise, as well as to involve themselves in the decision-making process by sharing their opinion, thoughts, ideas and concerns whenever appropriate.
