Core Values of Sierra Vista Baptist Church
We are a group of believers centered around God's Word. We seek to glorify God in our worship, and all of life.
Biblical Sermons: Based on our conviction that the Bible is The Word of God (2 Tim 3:16-17). Every word is pure and true without any mixture of error. Therefore, every word deserves to be examined and understood in the context that it was written. The preacher is to submit to the Word of God in his preaching and will preach the message of the text and not twist it to fit his own views. The preacher's job is to clarify and expound on the text skillfully providing application for today. The goal of the sermon is for all to leave thinking and knowing what God is saying to me from His Word.
Congregational Singing: Based on the New Testament requirement that we are to sing together and to each other (Eph 5:19) we value Congregational Singing. The goal of our singing is for the voices of the congregation to be prominent and the words clear and Christ-centered. Our songs are selected on three criteria.
1) Is it true? We must sing songs that affirm biblical and theological truth.
2) Is it singable? Some songs are difficult to sing because of the vocal range and complexity.
3) Is it familiar? Songs have to be learned and introduced over a period of time; we take time to teach the congregation the less familiar song so that we all can participate.
Multigenerational: Based on Titus 2:1-10 that tells us that older women are to teach younger women, and Older men are to be sober-minded. This means that we have an obligation to share our faith with the next generation. We seek to be a place that is welcoming to all ages and generations and not to prize one group over any other.
Mission Minded: Based on the Great Commission in Matt 28:19-10 we have a passion for missions, we are committed to the Great Commission and seek to make disciples of all nations. We support various missionaries around the world as well as missions close to home. We seek to take the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth, starting at our own neighborhoods.
Plurality of Elders: We believe the term elder and pastor are synonymous. The primary task before Elders is the “Shepherding of God’s flock which the Holy Spirit has put under their care” (1 Pet 5:2). They will work together to shepherd the people God has entrusted to them. Their primary duties consist of teaching, keeping watch over the spiritual health of the church and protecting it from doctrinal error, leading the church in the worship of God, setting an example of godly attitudes and living, and delegating practical ministry.
